Actor Vivek Oberoi opened up about the unexpected journey that shaped his career as an entrepreneur, revealing how his father, actor Suresh Oberoi, instilled a sense of business acumen in him from a young age. At just 10 years old, Oberoi was already on the path to entrepreneurship, thanks to his father’s unique approach to summer holidays.
“My dad was my biggest inspiration,” Oberoi told India Today Digital. “Every summer, he would tell us, ‘You have one month before we go for our holiday.’ But in that one month, the way we were rubbed…” the Saathiya actor shared.
Instead of indulging in typical summer activities, Oberoi found himself immersed in the world of business. His father would provide him with inventory, including perfumes, asking him to track costs, sell above those costs, and keep the profits as pocket money.
“He taught us the basics of business in a practical way. I would go knocking on doors, meeting people, and exploring different markets,” he recalled, emphasising how these experiences became the foundational building blocks of his business knowledge. “My father never let us feel like we were rich. He always said, ‘You are a rich man’s son, but you are not a rich man yourself.’ Success comes from hard work and ethics,” said Oberoi.
By the age of 16, Oberoi was delving into the world of stocks and shares, applying the work ethic his father instilled in him.
“I even approached a stockbroker to practice for a few hours. I wanted to learn everything about stocks and commodities,” he explained. His determination paid off; by 19, he founded his first technology company—a venture that would pave the way for his future success. “Back then, we didn’t even have the term ‘startup,'” he laughed. “I was fortunate to sell it for a good price by 22, making my investors and myself some money while boosting my confidence.”
With a strong foundation in entrepreneurship, Oberoi then pursued his passion for film, earning a master’s degree in the field from New York. “That was the turning point for me,” he said, reflecting on his transition from business to Bollywood.
Despite being a successful entrepreneur, Vivek Oberoi opted to become an actor. When asked why, he gave a firm reply: “Acting is my passion.”
Vivek Oberoi is currently focusing on his businesses and will get back on the film set next year with his popular Masti franchise.
